The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring (CTLM) works to energize and amplify faculty, staff, and student efforts to support Arcadia’s innovative pedagogies and adaptive strategies. The CTLM serves the needs of all members of the Arcadia community––faculty, staff, and student peer educators––who are responsible for delivering transformative learning experiences. The CTLM Director along with Faculty, Staff, and Student CTLM Fellows work to collaboratively lead teaching, learning, and mentoring discussions and innovations on campus, shape academic continuity processes and plans and plan innovative teaching, learning, and mentoring initiatives in the coming academic year.
The CTLM works to unite, support, and build up our community partners, including the JEDI commission, Information Technology, Faculty Senate, Staff Council, the Adjunct Union, Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Office of Career Education, Office of International Programs, Student Affairs, the Library, Disability Support Services, and the Learning Resources Network.
A key part of Arcadia University’s Adaptive Strategy for Arcadia 2025 was to establish a Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring. Our work is founded in Strategic Theme One: Academic Excellence Through Impact and Authenticity coupled with Strategic Goal #3: Empowering Students Through Transformational Teaching, Learning, Mentoring, and Research. Theme One: Arcadia University’s long-standing traditions of innovation, inclusion, and global engagement establish a unique evolutionary opportunity for the next decade: to redefine academic excellence as Arcadia’s success in meeting students where they are, building transformational academic and professional experiences, and measuring attainment in terms of social impact and self-fulfillment.
Grounded in the belief that the entire Arcadia community should be committed to transforming lives, and recognizing the opportunities for pedagogical innovation across all disciplines, the CTLM will work to build capacity within and across units, roles, and programs to deliver on Arcadia’s mission, vision, and values. The CTLM will work to develop outreach strategies and support systems for the Inclusive Pedagogy Framework and to deepen support for faculty research and expand student involvement. Dr. Ellen Skilton, professor of Education, has been appointed the inaugural Faculty Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Mentorship (CTLM) at Arcadia University, effective June 1. Dr. Skilton will be responsible for assembling a team of faculty, staff, and student partners to support Arcadia’s innovative pedagogies and adaptive strategies and deliver transformative learning experiences.
Serving on the Arcadia faculty since 2004, Dr. Skilton brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. Through administrative positions such as the chair of the Undergraduate Academic Program Committee, director of Global Connections, department chair in the School of Education, and former chair of the Academics Committee, Dr. Skilton has had tremendous success as a collaborator, leader, and mentor across departments with both faculty and staff. As an applied linguist and educational anthropologist, her ongoing scholarship focuses on asset-based policies, practices, and pedagogies for linguistically, culturally, academically, and racially diverse students. Her recent research as the University’s first Rosemary and Walter Blankley Endowed Chair in Education (2014-2017) incorporated theater arts and poetry in non-theater and non-humanities courses as tools to reflect on local/global interconnections, interdependence, and inequities.
Dr. Skilton earned a Ph.D. with distinction and an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Earlham College in Indiana.

Next Steps
Want to become a fellow? When there are faculty/staff fellow openings a call will go out to University from the Provost office. The call will seek applicants interested in becoming part of the CTLM team. All those interested will be asked to submit a Letters of Interest and current cv, by the named deadline.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The paid CTLM Fellows will join a diverse group of cross-campus constituents to 1) collaboratively lead teaching, learning, and mentoring discussions and innovations, 2) shape academic continuity processes and plans for the upcoming semester, and 3) continue implementation and planning for several innovative teaching, learning, and mentoring initiatives in the coming academic year.
