Glenside, Pennsylvania, is a quiet, safe suburban community at the northern boundary of Philadelphia. Students will find that they can walk to the supermarket or to the Glenside downtown area and feel safe. As in all areas, though the crime statistics are relatively low for this area, caution should always be taken at night. Click on link for a map of the Arcadia campus.
Students have many different options for campus housing. Some live in the campus accommodations in Knight Hall, Heinz Hall, or the campus apartments in Oak Summit, depending on availability. Go to campus housing to read about the different campus accommodations and the various costs. Other students often live in apartments off campus and there are several to choose from. The office of International Affairs helps students to find affordable housing in the area. Homestay with an American family is another option, depending on availability.
Students can open up bank accounts with their passports, their Arcadia IDs, and a minimum deposit at the local banks: PNC Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Citizen’s Bank, and Bank of America.
On campus there is a Dining Hall that is open for students, faculty, and staff and that offers affordable meal plans. In addition, the campus is located within walking distance to several local restaurants and food stores. Smaller cafes are also open on campus during the Fall and Spring semesters, including the Chat and the Easton Café.
Just down the street from Arcadia campus is a large shopping center with a Walmart store, a grocery store (PathMark) and several other smaller shopping venues. A larger shopping mall called the Willow Grove Park Mall is located a short bus ride away.
Students at Arcadia University have full access to the Library, the game room, the student lounges and study rooms, the gymnasium, the exercise and aerobics rooms, and the swimming pool. In addition, there are several sports fields on campus, including a tennis court, a baseball field, a soccer field, etc.
There are three major bus routes that run past Arcadia University Campus: Route H, Route 22, and Route 77. In addition, the Glenside train station is located a short walk from campus and students can take three different rail lines into the Philadelphia Center City and to the airport. Local Healthcare Centers
In addition to Student Health Services on campus, there are two health care centers that have medical technicians and doctors. Temple University ReadyCare is located nearby in Jenkintown and Abington Memorial Hospital is only a few miles from campus.
At Arcadia University, all students are required to have health insurance as well as all up-to-date immunizations. Arcadia University offers a student plan for health insurance, but students can purchase their own insurance if they choose and then provide proof of coverage. Student Health Services offers some health services for students on campus.
Each semester, the English Language Institute pairs its students up with native English speakers for informal conversational practice. These native speakers are usually students and staff members at Arcadia, most of whom have an interest in learning about the language and culture of others. The English Language Institute also hosts a pizza party for conversation partners to facilitate further conversational practice as well as intercultural friendships on campus.
